Public Safety Updates

The LWRA mandate from Council is to erect booms and ensure the safety of our residents by implementing necessary security measures.

The booms have served as an excellent safety barrier for many years. Although crime cannot be entirely eradicated, we have significantly improved the security of our suburbs compared to the dire state they were in before the Closure. Ironically, while our safety measures have created a more secure environment, some undesirable elements still use our streets and parks for illicit activities. It is disheartening to find remnants of such behavior—empty cough syrup bottles, small packets, needles, syringes, and other litter. A heartfelt thank you to the fabulous litter angels who diligently clean up every morning.

We remain vigilant and aware of criminal activities beyond our area. Our SNPR (Licence Plate Recognition) and CCTV cameras help us monitor individuals entering the neighborhood, and we are managing (just) to keep tabs on potential threats.

Unfortunately, some vulnerable residents have been targeted due to their businesses. Our goal is to ensure that every resident feels safe in their home and community.

To deter unwanted individuals and ensure heightened security, we have adopted modern technology in collaboration with security companies. Our solution: RFID tags.

How RFID Tags Work

Contributing residents simply download the One Space app, register their vehicles, and receive a small tag strip to attach to their windscreen. When approaching the boom, the system automatically opens the gate for them. For those without tags, vehicle license discs and driver’s licenses are scanned using sophisticated equipment that securely uploads the data to cloud storage.

Importantly, no guards, employees, or LWRA representatives can access this data. It is only accessible by SAPS in the event of a criminal incident, and only with an official SAPS case number.

Implementation and Progress

We’ve discussed this system with residents for over a year and held a vote among contributing members. 97% voted in favor of the system, and the decision was finalized at the October 2024 AGM. After thorough testing and adjustments, the system officially launched at Woburn Gate in December 2024.

Currently, the tagging system is operational at Sunny, Sher, and Woburn Gates, with scanning limited to Woburn. Residents have reported great satisfaction, especially during rainy days, with one resident calling it a “hands-free” convenience. Soon, contributing residents will also have the option to use the Main Reef entrance, bypassing Woburn entirely.

Access and Expansion

For now, only contributing residents can apply for tags. However, we are exploring options for those with specific access needs, such as schools, work, or prayer. Tags for non-contributors can also be programmed to work only during designated times or days.

Rest assured, no one will be denied access to the area since our streets remain public roads. However, non-contributors will need to present their driver’s license. Encouragingly, we’ve already noticed some suspicious visitors making U-turns to avoid providing their information!

We also hope that individuals using the area as a shortcut will recognize it as a residential zone and adjust their driving habits accordingly.

A Remarkable Achievement

We’re proud to announce that in December 2024, ZERO criminal incidents were recorded in our area—a significant accomplishment for any community in South Africa.

The LWRA remains committed to the safety and well-being of all residents. Together, we continue to build a safer, stronger, and more connected neighborhood.
